GROUP DISCUSSION: Remember these 15 points

GROUP DISCUSSION

Group Discussion or GD is a way of screening in the interview. In GD, the candidate’s communication level is tested. When there are a group of candidates, they have to pass the GD round first and then face the PI or Personal Interview round.

There are some rules for appearing or facing the GD round. These are given below: –

1. A topic is given to the candidates and they are allowed to think on it for a few minutes.
2. The candidates are gathered together in one room and the interviewers may or may not sit in that room.
3. After the time starts, the candidates have to start speaking on the given topic.
4. The topic may be of general discussion or some debatable topics may also be given. If there is a debatable topic, then the candidate has to speak either for or against the topic. Some positive and negative points can be said either in favour or against the topic.
5. The person who speaks first, gains the maximum points.
6. The candidate who can speak the most in the allotted time gets the advantage.
7. When the other candidate speaks, he/she should not be interrupted in between.
8. But, the candidate must find a gap when the other person is speaking and then start his speech.
9. The person who waits for the others to finish their speech and thus, becomes the last speaker gets negative points.
10. Whatever comes in mind related to the given topic can be said. Anything and everything can be said based on the topic. The point is to speak in English fluently and clearly as long as possible.
11. Some new points must be added or the previous points repeated along with one or two new points, while speaking.
12. One should not force or try to impose his/her point of view on the other speakers.
13. Argument must be done in a positive way, not by shouting or quarreling.
14. Some common examples or personal experiences related to the given topic may be shared.
15. The speech should be attractive and not monotonous or dull. The interviewers as well as the other speakers must be impressed by the speech.

These are some common topics of GD: –

1. Dot
2. Blood
3. Room
4. Hotel
5. Foot
6. Human-beings
7. Pen
8. Air
9. Education
10. Attraction

There are also some debatable topics of GD where we have to say for or against the topics, like: –

  • Women empowerment in India,
  • Poverty in India,
  • Marriage vs. Live-in,
  • Social Networking in our lives,
  • Facebook vs. Linkedin,
  • Work fom Home vs. Work from Office
  • and more…. See Top 30 GD Topics

Other than these, many topics based on the current affairs or the recent events that are happening may also be given. So, to be successful in a GD, a candidate must have enough general knowledge other than their studies curriculum.
